Walking Liberty
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a US silver coin worth half a dollar or 50 cents, minted from 1916 to 1947. Designed by Adolph Alexander Weinmann, the coin is named after its motif, the walking goddess of freedom, Lady Liberty .
The obverse of the coin depicts Lady Liberty, the American goddess of liberty, walking to the left, wrapped in a long robe. She is carrying a Phrygian coin and is surrounded by the American flag. In her left hand she holds an oak branch and an olive branch, while her right arm is stretched forward. In the background is a mountain with a rising sun. At the top is the inscription "LIBERTY" and at the bottom the year of minting. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and , until 1917, the mint mark are positioned to the right: a D for Denver and an S for San Francisco. If there is no mint mark, the coin was minted in Philadelphia.
